Not all air compressor fittings are capable of locking the airtightly without any leakage. Even the best fittings will eventually leak air when these get old. In this case, you can either get new fittings for your compressor or you can simply use thread sealant instead.
What great about thread sealants is that these are cheaper and will support you for a long time. This is why I am sharing my reviews of the best thread sealant for air compressor fittings that you can ask for.

Review
The Mill-Rose 70885 Blue Monster Thread Sealant Tape is a general-purpose, thick, dense, tape that is total 1429 inches long. This is five times more than other low-density, thin, low-quality sealant tapes.
You will need only a few wraps of this tape over your compressor fittings to easily make the joint leak-proof. You don’t have to waste your tape and there is no need for any re-taping.
PTFE resin is used to manufacture this thread sealant tape. This is a polymer that consists of tetrafluoroethylene monomers. This component is inert and it is compatible with different types of material (i.e. bronze, brass, galvanized steel iron, copper, stainless steel, aluminum, polypropylene, polyethylene, CPVS, PVC, ABS, fiberglass, etc.).
What We Like
- It is quite thick.
- Edges are pretty sharp.
- It is universal.
- Don’t slip when wrapped.
What We Don’t Like
- Not good with hot oil seal.
Dixon Valve TTB75 PTFE Industrial Sealant Tape
Specification
- Length: 520 Inches
- Width: ¾ Inch
- Thickness: 3.5 mm
- Weight: 0.16 ounces
- Temperature Range: -212ºF to 500ºF
- Material: PTFE
Review
The Dixon Valve TTB75 PTFE Industrial Sealant Tape is used for sealing air compressor fittings so that you can lock the air inside and prevent leakage. However, this sealant can also be used for pipes where water flows.
This thread sealant is more than 40 feet long and it is thicker than most other thread sealant pipes. This is why it can withstand very high pressure.
As long as the temperature of the fluid flowing in the pipe is below 500ºF you can use this sealant to avoid leakage. If the temperature is above this limit, the sealant will still work but it will start to disintegrate. And if the temperature reaches 700ºF, the tape will fully disintegrate.
What We Like
- Suitable for stretching a piercing.
- Very wide, fewer wraps required.
- Cheap but very durable.
- Great for plumbing aside from compressor fittings.
- Easy to wrap and very strong.
What We Don’t Like
- Not recommended for gas flow.
Skylety 10 Rolls Thread Seal Tapes

Review
If you are looking for a Teflon made sealant tape, then the Skylety 10 Rolls Thread Seal Tapes set is the best choice. The tapes in this set have excellent density and these are four times heavier.
These tapes will not crack or harden easily. On top of that, these are highly corrosion resistant. It is very simple to wrap these tapes around air compressor fittings. These tapes won’t stick on your fingers. These are also easily removable.
The Skylety 10 Rolls Thread Seal Tapes are not only compatible with air compressor fittings but also with different types of pipe threads. Aside from sealing the air compressor, you can also use these tapes for gas or water pipes.
What We Like
- Easy to use.
- The set has different sizes of tapes.
- These tapes wrap strongly.
What We Don’t Like
- Don’t work with fasteners.
Rectorseal 23631 1/4 T Plus 2 Pipe Thread Sealant
Specification
- Material: Teflon, PTFE, Synthetic Fibers
- Weight: 6.7 Ounces
Review
The Rectorseal 23631 1/4 T Plus 2 Pipe Thread Sealant is made of Synthetic fibers and Teflon. This is why you get a stronger seal by using this thread sealant. Aside from using it on the compressor fittings, you can use it on pipes or joints where Gas, Refrigerants, Fuels, Water, Oils, etc. flows.
This is a non-hardening thread sealant. It has PTFE aside from the other two components given above (Teflon & Synthetic Fibers). The PTFE makes it strong and non-hardening so that you can easily apply or peel off this sealant.
The coefficient of friction of the thread sealant is very low. Which is why it gives a tighter joint but lower torque compared to other sealants. A resinous base is combined with the inert mineral fillers and the fibers of this sealant are dispersed there so that you have the maximum possible sealing performance.
What We Like
- Non-sticky
- Very strong seal.
- Breaks out easily if needed.
- Don’t damage the threads or fittings.
What We Don’t Like
- Cannot seal Nylog-Gasket.
If you want a thread sealant for air compressor fittings that you can also use for Nylog-Gasket, then I recommend you get the Refrigeration Technologies RT201B Thread Sealant.
It is from a different brand but it has the same features as the Rectorseal 23631. The only difference is that; this sealant works with Nylog-Gasket too.
Permatex 80632 Thread Sealant
Specification
- Material: PTFE
- Weight: 4 Ounces
- Type: Paste/Liquid
Review
The Permatex 80632 Thread Sealant is a general-purpose, economical air compressor fitting sealant. This sealant is better than most other thread sealant tapes and provides better performance than pipe dopes.
This thread sealant not only seals air of an air compressor fitting, but also resists leakage of oil, hydraulic system (water pipe), diesel fuel, and other media where these fluids flow.
You can use the Permatex 80632 Thread Sealant at both high and low temperatures. It will still seal the fittings properly if hot or cold air is flowing through the fittings.
Finally, you can use this sealant on different applications like temperature sending fittings, air conditioning fittings, hydraulic fittings, etc. Overall, this is one of the best thread sealant for compressed air according to my research.
What We Like
- Works great at both high and low temperatures.
- Easy to use.
- Usable for both air and liquid flow.
What We Don’t Like
- It takes a long time (24 Hours) to dry and seal.
There are three more thread sealants from Permatex with almost similar properties as the Permatex 80632 Thread Sealant. These are:
- Permatex 56521 High-Performance Thread Sealant
- Permatex 59235 High-Temperature Thread Sealant
- Permatex 54540 Pneumatic and Hydraulic Sealant
But there are some small differences among all these Permatex sealants. The one that I have talked about is usable for general purposes.
But you can use the Permatex 56521 for high performance, the Permatex 59235 for high temperature and the Permatex 54540 for both pneumatic and hydraulic flows.
The Permatex 54540 is bigger than all the other sealants. So if you want a bigger bottle you can choose this one.
Loctite 492145 545 Thread Sealant Bottle
Specifications
- Max Allowable Pressure: 10,000 PSI
- Weight: 1.6 Ounces
- Type: Paste/Liquid
Review
The Loctite 492145 545 Thread Sealant Bottle is made to seal and lock high-pressure hydraulic and pneumatic systems. It is mostly compatible with air compressor fittings.
This is a pure sealant and there is no contaminate or filler used to make this sealant. Any type of contaminates, unnecessary particles, or fillers are harmful to fittings as they clog and damage the parts. But you don’t have to worry about such contaminates if you use this sealant.
You can typically use this sealant for hydraulic line fittings, brake fittings, and PTO fittings aside from using it on the air compressor fittings. You can easily disassemble the fittings with the help of the controlled locking strength of this sealant.
What We Like
- It can withstand high pressure.
- No contaminates to damage fittings.
What We Don’t Like
- It cannot stop fuel leakage.
For a little lower price, you can get two more sealants from Loctite. These are:
- Loctite 303420 32429 545 Fittings Thread Sealant
- Loctite 483629 Thread Sealant
Both these sealants are as good as the one I have talked about in my reviews. They simply come in a smaller package and they cost less, that’s all.

- Not for flow lines that carry oxygen.
Below is another thread sealant from Gasoila with the same features.
- Gasoila E-Seal Pipe Thread Sealant
But this one contains less amount of paste inside the container and so it costs less. If you don’t need too much thread sealant at once you can have this one.
How to Seal Air Compressor Fittings?
Now I am going to talk about how to seal air compressor fittings. Follow my instructions below if you don’t know it already.
There are two types of sealant you can use for sealing air compressor fittings. These are:
- Tape Sealant
- Paste Sealant
Air compressor fittings or plugs are of two types. Male plugs and Female plugs. When you use a sealant, you will be using it on the Male plugs.
Seal Your Fittings with Tape Sealant
Using a tape sealant is exactly the same as you use any tape on any object. But you have to be careful while wrapping the tape over the fittings.
You have to wrap the sealant on the threaded portion of the male plug. Use a few layers at first then lock the fittings and test for leakage. If there is leakage unlock the fittings and wrap with some more layers.
Keep doing this until leakage stops. It’s that simple.
Seal Your Fittings with Paste Sealant
Paste sealants are also very easy to apply. Here all you have to do is rub the paste using a brush on the threaded portion of the fittings. Make a layer thick enough and then lock the fittings. After that let the paste dry.
When it is dried, you will have a fully sealed flow-line ready. It is simpler to apply than the tape sealant but it takes time to dry.
Things to Consider Before Buying Thread Sealant for Air Compressor
Here is a quick buying guide to help you choose the best thread sealant for your air compressor. There are a few points that you need to keep in while picking a thread sealant. These points are:
Set-Up Your Mind First
Set up your mind about which type of sealant you want to buy. As I have already said there are two types, Tape Sealants and Paste Sealants. Both are equally effective if you pick the right one.
Which Material Is It Made of?
Check out the material the sealant is made of. PTFE or polytetrafluoroethylene is the best material for a thread sealant for air compressors.
The Maximum Temperature Range
A thread sealant should be able to withstand high temperature because the air flowing through it may have a high temperature. So, pick a sealant that has a maximum temperature range of 500ºF or more.
Highest Pressure Level
The Maximum pressure level of the thread sealant you choose must be more than the maximum pressure level that your air compressor delivers.
Compatibility of the Sealant
You have to see the description to find out the compatibility of the sealant you get for your compressor. This is important because sometimes you will have to use the sealant for other parts aside from air compressor fittings.
My Final Words
It is not easy to find the best thread sealant for air compressor fittings. But I did my research carefully and narrowed it down to the sealants that you find on my list. Each of these sealants has its unique features but all of these sealants are the best one way or another.
Pick any one of the sealants from this list and it will surely get your job done. Finally, thank you for sharing your time with me. If you have any questions regarding thread sealant for compressor fittings you can ask me in the comment section below. I will get back to you as quickly as possible.
